Nursing Care for MSUD
A nurse's role with patients with MSUD is providing support, comfort, and knowledge of the disease to the family and child. It is a nurse's responsibility to help implement a plan a care for a family with an infant who has been diagnosed and continue to change the plan as the child develops.

The nurse is responsible to educate each family and patient with the dietary plans that have been ordered by their dietary physician and the importance of following the plan. This can only be done successfully if the nurse has adequate knowledge of the epidemiology and pathology of MSUD.

The nurse is responsible to make sure that the family fully understands the importance of the dietary recommendations and knows the proper steps to preparing the powder supplement and the correct amount of weight and measurement given for their child for their age.

A nurse should go over the risks of MSUD and promote a long term lifestyle of dietary restrictions and routine checkups to promote a long healthy normal life.

Another very important role is the nurses responsibility to listen to the family and patient with MSUD. Hearing their concerns, struggles, and questions can help alter the plan of care that creates better benefits for the individual and family and help ease the concerns they might have.

This can be a hard and challenging time for the patient and their family. Its important that the nurse is not just their nurse, but also apart of the family's support group. The patient should feel loved and heard by the nurse and the nurse should be their advocate. It is also important that the nurse recommended support groups and different areas for resources, such as apps and websites, where the family can get additional support and information.
